NZ’s history dates back at least 700 years to when Polynesians arrived. They settled and developed a distinct Māori culture centred on kinship links and connection with the land. The red-black-white cup was inspired by “Maori ware” manufactured by Royal Doulton (1906 to 1923). On top of this sits the blue-white cup, Angie’s own design that represents Dutch navigator Abel Tasman - the first European explorer to sight NZ and in 1642. In the late 18th century, British explorer James Cook became the first European to outline the coast of NZ - Cook is depicted by the yellow-pink cup, which may also be the cup he drank from on his voyages.
